By the end of this module the learner will be able to:

  • Discuss the major and trace minerals the body requires, including functions, sources and effects of deficiency or excess on general and oral health.
  • Discuss the physiological roles of water, electrolytes, sodium and potassium.
  • Identify sources of minerals from CFG.
  • Discuss how minerals optimize health to prevent disease
Recommended Daily Allowance of some minerals
Calcium 1,000 – 1300 mg/day ( varies with growth, if pregnant, after menopause)
Phosphorous 700 mg/day
Sodium 1500 mg/day
Potassium 4700 mg/day
Magnesium 11 mg/day
Iron Men 8 mg/day, women 18 mg/day  women 50+ 8 mg/day. Pregnancy 27 mg/day
Zinc Men 11 mg/day  women 9.5 mg/day
