Carbohydrates are one of the three macronutrients which also include fats and proteins. Carbohydrates are the primary source of energy providing 4kcal of energy per gram. The body’s red blood cells, brain and nerve cells rely on carbohydrate on glucose the most important carbohydrate. The Canada Food Guide recommends that 45-65% of food intake be made of carbohydrate. This important energy source not only provides the fuel for most cells, but also aids in digestion and elimination.
